Bio
Joel Houston is a South Carolina–born artist whose work explores the human experience through portraiture, history, and the traditions of figurative art. Raised in a close family of five children and shaped by years of competitive soccer alongside teammates from around the world, Houston developed an early fascination with people, culture, identity, and the forces that shape them.
His practice draws from a wide field of interests—including history, philosophy, religion, sport, music, and literature—and brings these influences into conversation with the traditions of European drawing and painting. His recent work reflects a growing engagement with classical draftsmanship and historical portraiture, often reconsidering contemporary Black subjects through the visual language of the past.
Houston received his B.A. in Studio Art from Converse University in 2024. That same year, he was awarded the Brandon Fellowship by the Greenville Center for Creative Arts, where he spent the following year developing his studio practice. He later traveled to Florence, Italy, to study under painter Thelonious Stokes, an experience that further deepened his commitment to traditional drawing and painting.
Houston is currently developing a new body of work while preparing to return to Florence to continue his artistic training.
